News from the Corner

Greetings from William & Grace at Dagoretti Corner.

Dear <<First Name>>,

The young man who recently tried to steal cloths from our church has been arrested by the police. He was brought to the church building, and confirmed that the hammer left behind during the robbery was his. He also showed the police how he had broken in through the roof. He is about 20 years old, and now faces a difficult time in prison.

In the first week of January, Mandy and Greg Daws from Syndal Baptist Church visited, and Mandy ran a teacher training program over three days. More than 80 people turned up to take the course, which was a Certificate 2 in Classroom Management, and 72 of them received a certificate of completion. The course was very well received, and we hope to be able to offer more like it in the future.

Last week the Kenya Help group (http://www.kenya-help.org.au) from Nowra, Australia, visited. They helped by painting rooms and buying textbooks, lab equipment, chemicals, bedding and tools. They interacted with students, provided counselling and career guidance, and arranged some other academic and extra-curricular activities.

The school term is now two weeks old. We need to register our final-year students for their end-of-year examinations by the end of January. The cost is $95 per students. We have funds to pay for some students, but we have 21 more students who are unable to afford the registration cost (total $1,995). Please let us know if you are able to help one or more very anxious students.

Juliana, a final-year student mentioned in a recent newsletter, is very relieved that a kind Australian sponsor has come forward to cover the costs of her boarding this year, after recent family difficulties made her homeless. Thank you to all our donors who are making such significant differences in young people's lives.

By next Monday, the International Criminal Court is due to issue a ruling on whether six prominent Kenyans should stand trial for organising murder, rape, and a number of other crimes against humanity following the disputed election results four years ago. There is a heightened level of tension because of fears that supporters of the accused could unleash more violence if the court's findings are adverse.

Please Pray For:

  • Students and teachers suffering stress, arising when the results of last year's exams fail to meet parental expectations
  • Those suffering from economic stress, which is leading to many suicides
  • A calm response to the ICC ruling
  • People displaced by government demolitions of structures built on public land
  • General safety in the face of terrorist threats by Al Shabaab
  • Sufficient funds to pay for registration of students by the end of this month
