News from the Corner

Greetings from William & Grace at Dagoretti Corner.

Dear <<First Name>>,

The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations for final year students start today. We held a prayer day for our students and their parents on Friday, and today science practical exams start in our laboratory. Our 31 candidates are well prepared, and we are all hoping that the exams with occur without incident and that the students will do well.

A visitor from Australia, Rebecca Adams, has been helping with renovating our library and cataloguing the books. She has also done some teaching at the Dagoretti Corner Primary School, together with two Swedish visitors, relating to caring for the environment, a very timely subject in view of the death last week of Kenya's Nobel Prize-winning environmentalist Wangari Maathai. The students collected rubbish and planted flowers.

Heavy rains and strong winds have caused flooding on Kenya's coast, so that hundreds of people have been displaced from their homes. Bridges have been washed away as well as one matatu (mini-bus), resulting in the deaths of several passengers. Students from the coast may have difficulties sitting their exams if their schools are flooded or they are unable to travel.

Following the recent kidnapping of two aid workers and various other kidnappings of Westerners in Kenya by Somali terrorists, the Kenyan government has declared a new war on terror and sent Kenyan troops across the border into Somalia to drive back al Shabaab. We are hoping that this does not result in greater insecurity in Kenya.

Please Pray For:

  • The students who are sitting their exams
  • Peace in Kenya and Somalia, in view of the Kenyan military action in Somalia
  • The economic situation, which continues to be bad
  • A church conference which we are hosting this week
  • Grace, who is currently unwell
