News from the Corner

Greetings from William & Grace at Dagoretti Corner.

Dear <<First Name>>,

The International Criminal Court is due later today to release the names of six people who are to be tried for inciting inter-ethnic violence following the disputed elections three years ago. The ring leaders have not yet been brought to justice for causing violence which resulted in more than 1,300 deaths, as powerful politicians have largely been treated as being above the law. It is rumoured that the suspects have organised mobs to create more violence as soon as the names are announced.

On a visit to Gatwikira Baptist Church Primary School, one of the three primary schools that we support and fund, we met Julie, a 16-year-old girl who has been violently raped by a group of young men and appears to be suffering internal injuries. She was too scared to report the matter to police or seek medical attention because of the likelihood of retaliation. The Gatwikira area of the Kibera slums is a very dangerous area.

The Gatwikira Baptist Church Primary School has 97 enrolled students, about half of whom are currently absent, visiting extended family in rural areas, as is the custom at Christmas time. The area around the school building is very dirty, with rotting garbage and mud making it an unsafe place for children to play.

William's brother Peter, who is the pastor of a church in Kamidakan, Uganda, has successfully completed a diploma of theology, and is hoping to find sponsorship to undertake a degree in theology. He is running Bible training courses for other pastors in his area.

Please Pray For:

  • Peace following the release of the names of the ICC suspects later today
  • Julie as she recovers from the violent rape
  • Absence of troubles during the exams (anxious students often set fire to schools at exam times)
  • The Gatwikira church and school as they struggle to survive in a very difficult environment
