News from the Corner

Greetings from William & Grace at Dagoretti Corner.

Dear <<First Name>>,

On Sunday evening our neighbours' 11-year-old daughter went missing from her house, and we spent most of the night walking around looking for her. We discovered on Monday that she had been abducted but had managed to escape from her captors in the middle of the night, shaken but unharmed.

The Baptist Convention of Kenya has agreed to take over the running of the Dagoretti Corner Primary School, and the handover will occur today. This will resolve the impasse which has existed with the school board failing to agree on the appointment of a new principal since the death of the previous headmaster on Christmas Day last year.

Transport in Nairobi has been very difficult over the past couple of weeks as a result of fuel shortages. Most petrol stations have been without fuel, and there have been very long queues at the few stations that have fuel. Some enterprising individuals have been purchasing fuel in jerry cans and selling it to queued motorists at a higher price. The fuel shortages have been caused by failures in the distribution chain, not by any actual lack of fuel.

With the recent death of Osama bin Laden, the risk of terrorist revenge attacks has increased. The bombing of the US Embassy in Nairobi in 1998 first brought Osama bin Laden to the attention of the world media. Now the police are vigorously checking anyone who looks like they might come from Somalia.

Recently there were riots in Uganda following the violent arrest of opposition leader Kizza Besigye, leader of the "Walk to Work" movement protesting the high cost of living. Many were shot and killed by police, including nine people who were not even involved in the protests, according to the Ugandan media. The protests are continuing.

Please Pray For:

  • The parts of Kenya which are still in drought and have missed out on rain now that the rainy season is drawing to a close.
  • The poor who are suffering because of the high cost of living, particularly food and transport.
  • Peace in Kenya and Uganda in the wake of cost of living protests.
  • Security in view of terrorist threats.
  • Grace's father, who was recently discharged from hospital and remains in need of funds for further treatment.
  • The smooth handover of Dagoretti Corner Primary School to the Baptist Convention.
